PAN (Permanent Account Number) is mandatory for income tax filing, salary, investments, and large transactions. Here's how to apply for a new PAN, correct your existing PAN, and get an instant e-PAN.

New PAN Card Application — Steps

Option 1: NSDL Portal (Protean)

  1. Go to protean-tinpan.com → "Apply Online" → New PAN
  2. Form 49A (for Indian citizens) or 49AA (for foreign citizens)
  3. Fill: name, DOB, address, Aadhaar, email, phone
  4. Upload documents (scan)
  5. Pay fee (₹107 for Indian address, ₹1,017 for foreign address)
  6. Submit and get acknowledgement number
  7. Physical card delivered in 15–20 days; e-PAN available sooner

Option 2: UTIITSL Portal

  1. Go to utiitsl.com → PAN Online Services → New PAN
  2. Same Form 49A process
  3. Similar timeline and fee

Option 3: Instant e-PAN via Aadhaar (Free)

If you have Aadhaar linked to mobile number:

  1. Go to incometax.gov.in → "Instant e-PAN"
  2. Enter Aadhaar number → OTP verification
  3. PAN generated instantly — free PDF
  4. Name, DOB, address pulled from Aadhaar automatically

This is only for new PAN (no existing PAN). If you already have a PAN, don't apply again — it's illegal to have two PANs.

PAN Correction — Name, DOB, Signature

To correct your PAN card (name spelling, date of birth error, signature update, photo change):

  1. Use the same NSDL or UTIITSL portal
  2. Select "Correction in PAN data" / "Reprint PAN card"
  3. Enter existing PAN number
  4. Fill the correction form with correct details
  5. Upload supporting documents (Aadhaar, birth certificate for DOB correction)
  6. Pay fee (₹107) and submit
  7. New corrected card delivered in 15–20 days

PAN-Aadhaar Linking — Mandatory

PAN and Aadhaar must be linked. The original deadline has passed — if not linked, a penalty of ₹1,000 is applicable and PAN becomes inoperative for financial transactions. To link:

  1. incometax.gov.in → "Link Aadhaar"
  2. Pay penalty challan (if applicable) first
  3. Then enter PAN and Aadhaar to link
  4. Confirmation comes in a few days via SMS/email
If your PAN is inoperative due to non-linking — TDS will be deducted at a higher rate (20%) and you cannot file ITR. Fix it urgently.
