UAN Activation Guide 2025 — How to Activate UAN on EPFO Portal Step by Step
- UAN number — get from employer (salary slip or welcome letter)
- Aadhaar number + mobile number linked to Aadhaar (for OTP)
- Date of birth matching Aadhaar
- Member ID (PF account number assigned by current employer)
- Bank account details for KYC (after activation)
- PAN card (for KYC linking)
UAN (Universal Account Number) is your permanent 12-digit PF account identifier — it stays the same across all your jobs. Activating UAN unlocks access to EPF passbook, balance check, withdrawal claims, and transfer requests. Here's the step-by-step process.
What is UAN?
UAN is issued by EPFO to every employee covered under EPF. Unlike the PF account number (which changes with each employer), UAN never changes. Each new employer links their PF account to your existing UAN, creating a continuous record of contributions.
How to Get Your UAN Number
- Your employer shares UAN when you join — check your salary slip (usually printed on first slip)
- Ask HR if not found on slip
- Check via EPFO member portal using Member ID (PF account number)
- SMS to 7738299899: "EPFOHO UAN ENG" from your registered mobile
Step-by-Step UAN Activation — Aadhaar OTP Method
Step 1: Go to EPFO Unified Portal
Visit unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in → Click "Activate UAN" on the login page.
Step 2: Enter UAN and Details
Fill in:
- UAN number (12 digits)
- Member ID (your PF account number from current employer)
- Aadhaar number
- Name (as per Aadhaar)
- Date of birth (as per Aadhaar)
- Mobile number (Aadhaar-linked — OTP will come here)
Step 3: Enter Captcha and Get OTP
Enter the captcha shown on screen. Click "Get Authorization Pin". OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
Step 4: Validate OTP
Enter the OTP received within 10 minutes. Click "Validate OTP and Activate UAN".
Step 5: Set Password
On successful OTP verification, EPFO sends a password to your registered mobile. Use this temporary password to log in and change it immediately to a strong password.
Step 6: Login and Complete KYC
After activation, login to portal → Go to "Manage" → "KYC" → Link Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account. Aadhaar linking is mandatory for claims and withdrawals.
KYC Linking — Why It Matters
- Aadhaar KYC — required for PF withdrawal, claim filing
- PAN KYC — required to avoid higher TDS on PF withdrawal (if before 5 years)
- Bank account KYC — required for receiving PF withdrawal money
KYC documents need employer approval — your employer's HR logs into their employer portal and verifies KYC submissions. Status changes from "KYC Pending" to "Approved" after verification.
Common UAN Activation Problems and Fixes
OTP Not Coming
- Aadhaar may be linked to a different mobile number
- Update mobile number in Aadhaar at nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra first
- Try after mobile number is updated in Aadhaar database (takes 24–48 hours)
"UAN Already Activated"
- Someone (possibly HR) may have already activated it
- Use "Forgot Password" on the login page to reset access
Details Mismatch Error
- Name or DOB entered doesn't match Aadhaar
- Enter exactly as shown on Aadhaar (spelling, middle name, date format)
- If name in EPF records doesn't match Aadhaar, contact employer to correct records first
UAN Not Generated Yet
- Employer must register you with EPFO to generate UAN
- If UAN not shared within first month of joining, follow up with HR
- Employer can generate UAN through EPFO employer portal
Always use the same mobile number across Aadhaar, UAN, and bank account. Inconsistency across these three creates verification failures for PF claims and withdrawals.
What You Can Do After UAN Activation
- Check EPF passbook — see monthly contribution history
- Check EPF balance in real time
- Download EPF passbook as PDF
- File PF withdrawal claims online (Form 19, 31)
- Initiate PF transfer when changing jobs (Form 13)
- Update personal details (name, DOB, gender)
- Check EPS pension account
