EPF Transfer Online — How to Transfer PF When Changing Jobs 2025
- UAN remains the same across all jobs — key to seamless transfer
- Transfer online via EPFO unified portal — no physical paperwork
- Previous employer or new employer can verify/approve the transfer
- Service continuity preserved — important for gratuity eligibility
- Transfer takes 20–30 working days after employer approval
- Always transfer — don't let old PF sit idle for years
When you change jobs, your EPF balance from your old company stays in the old account unless you transfer it. With UAN (Universal Account Number), the process is now fully online and straightforward. Here's how to do it.
Why Transfer Instead of Withdrawing?
- If you withdraw PF before 5 years of service, TDS is deducted (10%)
- Withdrawing breaks the service continuity — you lose interest on EPF history
- Transfer preserves your EPS service years — crucial for pension eligibility
- EPF interest (currently 8.25%) keeps compounding on the transferred amount
Even small old PF balances should be transferred. ₹50,000 growing at 8.25% compound for 10 years = ₹1,10,000+. Don't leave money idle in an inactive account.
Before You Start — Prerequisites
- UAN must be activated on EPFO portal
- Aadhaar linked and verified with UAN
- Bank account linked with UAN
- KYC complete on EPFO portal
- New employer must have registered you with EPFO under the same UAN
EPF Transfer Online — Step by Step
Step 1: Login to EPFO Unified Portal
Go to unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in → login with UAN and password.
Step 2: Go to Online Services → Transfer Request
"Online Services" → "One Member One EPF Account (Transfer Request)" → click.
Step 3: Verify Current Employment Details
Current employer details auto-populate. Verify PF account number for new company.
Step 4: Enter Previous Employment Details
Enter previous employer's PF account number (from old salary slips or EPFO passbook). Select the old PF account to transfer.
Step 5: Choose Approver
Select who will verify: Previous Employer or Current Employer. Either can approve — choose whichever is easier to follow up with.
Step 6: OTP Verification
OTP sent to Aadhaar-linked mobile. Enter and submit.
Step 7: Employer Approves
Employer logs into their EPFO Employer portal and approves the transfer request (typically within 3–7 days). Once approved, EPFO processes the transfer in 20–30 working days.
Tracking Transfer Status
Track at: EPFO portal → "Online Services" → "Track Claim Status" → enter acknowledgement number from transfer request.
Multiple Old PF Accounts — Consolidation
If you have multiple old PF accounts across different companies (without UAN link or separate UANs), you can merge them:
- For multiple UANs: fill EPFO grievance form to merge UANs
- Transfer each old account one by one to current account
- EPFO has a "One Member One EPF Account" scheme specifically for this
What if Old Employer Doesn't Respond?
- Submit grievance on epfigms.gov.in (EPF grievance portal)
- Or choose "Current Employer" to approve instead of previous employer
- If employer is defunct — contact EPFO office directly with proof of employment
