Salary slip haath mein aayi — lekin uss pe likhe "Basic", "HRA", "DA", "LOP", "PF", "PT" — yeh sab kya hain? Kuch log toh sirf "Net Pay" dekh ke rakh dete hain.
Lekin salary slip samajhna zaroori hai — isse aap apna tax, PF, aur actual takehome sahi se plan kar sakte ho.
Salary Slip Ka Structure
Every salary slip has two main sections:
- Earnings — what you're paid (positive amounts)
- Deductions — what's subtracted before you get cash
Net Pay = Total Earnings − Total Deductions
Sample Salary Slip — ₹6 LPA Employee
Earnings — Har Component Kya Hai?
1. Basic Salary
Salary ka sabse important component — usually 40-50% of CTC. Iske pe PF, gratuity, leave encashment sab calculate hota hai. Jitna zyada basic, utna zyada PF kata aur gratuity milegi — lekin take-home kam hoga.
2. House Rent Allowance (HRA)
Rent ke liye allowance. Agar aap rented accommodation mein rehte ho toh HRA pe tax exemption milti hai (Section 10(13A)).
HRA exemption — minimum of:
- Actual HRA received
- 50% of basic (metro cities) or 40% (non-metro)
- Actual rent paid minus 10% of basic
3. Dearness Allowance (DA)
Cost of living increase ke liye allowance. Government employees mein common. Private sector mein bahut kam companies DA deti hain. DA fully taxable hai.
4. Special Allowance
Remaining CTC ka balance fill karne ke liye — fully taxable. Companies ise differently name karti hain (Flexible Allowance, Performance Pay, etc.)
5. Leave Travel Allowance (LTA)
Travel expenses ke liye — annual ya once in 4 years. Tax exemption milti hai agar actual travel bills submit karo. Generally 2 journeys in 4 years exempt.
6. Medical Allowance / Reimbursement
Medical expenses ke liye. ₹15,000 per year up to 2018-19 was exempt — now covered under ₹50,000 Standard Deduction for salaried employees.
7. Conveyance / Transport Allowance
Office commute ke liye. ₹1,600/month up to 2018-19 was exempt — now part of standard deduction. Fully taxable now in most cases.
Deductions — Har Kata Kyu?
1. PF (Provident Fund) — Employee Share
Mandatory 12% of Basic Salary. Goes to your EPF account. Employers also contribute matching 12% (their share doesn't reduce your take-home — it's extra).
2. ESI (Employee State Insurance)
0.75% of Gross Salary — only if gross ≤ ₹21,000/month. Gives you access to ESIC hospitals and benefits.
3. TDS (Tax Deducted at Source)
Income Tax deducted based on your estimated annual tax liability. If you submit investment declarations (80C, HRA, etc.) properly, TDS reduces. No TDS if income is below basic exemption limit.
4. Professional Tax (PT)
State government tax — usually ₹200/month (varies by state). Deductible from income for tax purposes. Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal etc. charge this.
5. LOP (Loss of Pay)
Days absent beyond entitled leaves. If you took 2 extra leave days this month, 2 days' salary is deducted.
What Employer Contributes (Not on Your Slip)
Beyond your salary, employer also pays:
| Component | Rate | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PF (Employer Share) | 12% of basic | Goes to EPF; 8.33% to EPS (pension) |
| ESI (Employer Share) | 3.25% of gross | Only if gross ≤ ₹21,000 |
| Gratuity (Provision) | ~4.81% of basic | Paid on exit after 5 years |
These are part of your CTC but NOT in your earnings or deductions. This is why CTC > Gross Salary > Net Pay.
Salary Slip Mistakes to Watch For
- PF not shown — employer might not be depositing your PF
- Basic too low — reduces PF, gratuity — check vs offer letter
- Excess TDS — submit your investment proof declarations to HR timely
- PT deducted but wrong amount — check your state's PT slab
- LOP deducted incorrectly — verify your attendance and leave balance
