Recordly Kya Hai?

Recordly is a free, open-source screen recorder and editor built by @webadderall and open-source contributors. Its license is AGPL-3.0 — free to use, modify, and redistribute as long as any modifications stay open-source. The project lives at github.com/webadderallorg/Recordly and ships native builds for macOS 14+, Windows 10 (build 19041+), and Linux.

The core idea is straightforward: you record your screen, Recordly's editor watches where your cursor went and suggests zoom regions automatically, then you wrap the whole recording in a styled frame — wallpaper or gradient background, rounded corners, shadow, padding. Result: a screen recording that looks like a polished product demo, without hand-animating a single zoom keyframe.

System Requirements

PlatformMinimum version
macOSmacOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer
WindowsWindows 10, build 19041 or newer
LinuxAny modern distro; Wayland note below

Step 1 — Download and Install

Go to github.com/webadderallorg/Recordly/releases and download the build for your operating system. The current latest release is v1.4.0. Install it the standard way for your platform.

You can also check the official site at recordly.dev for download links and an overview of what the current version includes.

Step 2 — Record

Open Recordly and press Record. You can capture:

Microphone and system audio are optional — toggle them on or off before you start. Once you click record, Recordly tracks your cursor positions and click activity in the background. This cursor data is what drives the auto-zoom suggestions in the editor.

Step 3 — Edit in the Built-In Editor

When you stop recording, the clip opens automatically in Recordly's editor. Here is what you can do:

Auto-Zoom Suggestions

Recordly analyzes where your cursor was active and suggests zoom regions at those points. You can accept each suggestion, adjust the zoom level and position, or delete suggestions you do not want. You can also add manual zoom regions anywhere on the timeline.

Background and Frame Styling

The editor wraps your recording in a styled frame. Options include:

These settings give recordings the clean, padded-browser-window look common in product demo videos — without any separate design tool.

Timeline Controls

The timeline lets you:

Cursor Smoothing

Recordly automatically smooths cursor movement in the exported video. Shaky or fast mouse movements are blended into clean, slow arcs — another element that makes the final video look intentionally produced rather than raw recorded.

Webcam Bubble

If you turned on your webcam before recording, a webcam bubble appears in the editor. It scales with zoom — when Recordly zooms into a section, the webcam bubble proportionally adjusts so your face stays visible and correctly sized.

Step 4 — Export

When you are done editing, export the video. Recordly supports two formats:

Your work is also saved as a .recordly project file, so you can reopen and re-edit the recording at any time without re-exporting everything from scratch.

Linux-Specific Notes

Recordly runs on Linux, but there are two things to know before you start:

Extensions Marketplace

Recordly has an extensions marketplace at marketplace.recordly.dev/extensions. Extensions add capabilities on top of the core app. Check the marketplace after your first recording to see what the community has built.
