This is illegal. Here's what you can do:

  1. Keep records — save salary slips, bank statements, appointment letter
  2. File complaint with Labour Inspector under Minimum Wages Act
  3. Inspector will issue notice and investigate employer
  4. Employer liable to pay difference + interest
  5. Criminal penalty: Up to 6 months imprisonment + fine
"Payment of wages less than the minimum wage is an offense punishable with imprisonment and fine under Section 22 of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948."

IT Professionals — Are There Minimum Wages?

Minimum wages in India apply to "scheduled employments" — specific industries listed by each state. IT software companies are NOT typically listed as scheduled employments in most states.

However, if you're in an IT company in a state that has included IT under scheduled employment, minimum wage rules apply. Karnataka, for example, has taken steps towards this.

For most IT/tech professionals, your employment contract and applicable company policy govern pay. If company pays below contract amount — that's a separate contractual dispute.

Domestic Workers — Minimum Wages

Several states now have minimum wages for domestic workers (cooks, drivers, maids):

If you employ domestic help or work as domestic help — check your state's notification.

State Labour Departments: Most states publish notifications at their official websites — search "[State Name] Labour Department Minimum Wages 2025"
